The Diez/Dietz Family from 1301 Lutts Road, Youngstown, NY 14174 is conducting a genealogy search for our family that came from Germany to America in 1868 on the Steamer Union. The Steamer Union arrived in New York City on February 3, 1868 from Bremen. Our ancestors, Johann Friedrich Diez and his wife Anna Barbara Holder Diez left Dettingen-unter-teck near Stuttgart in 1868. Dettingen-unter-teck means Dettingen under the castle-Teck. They went to Wilson, NY and later Youngstown, NY. He was a farmer. They had one son Jacob when they left. Jacob was born in Germany. Johann Friedrich was born in Dettingen-unter-teck on 4-4-1843. Anna Barbara was born 09-26-1846. Family lore indicated that some family members went to the Chicago area. Some said North Carolina, Texas, Pa, and Colorado but we think relatives could be anywhere. For a list of their children click here.
One of our Diez ancestors left Dettingen for Pennsylvania in 1817 but we do not know his first name. If you are from Pa. and know your ancestry is from Dettingen unter Teck, Germany, please contact us. Please check the new data we have in the menu especially under maternal and paternal selections plus the eTree. We seek any other available information on any family members from all sources. Thank you.

Johannes Dietz was already living in Wilson, NY when Frederick arrived. We now believe that Johannes was Friedrich's older brother.
This info is from the 1870 census: Johannes Dietz, 35, Farmer, Wurtemburg, Christiana, 31, Housekeeper, Emily, 11, New York Louisa, 8, New York Elizabeth, 6, New York Sarah, 4, New York John, 3, New York- Jacob Friel (?spelling), 25, Farm Laborer, Wurtemberg.

More details:

Johann Friedrich Diez b. 4/4/1843 Dettingen unter Teck married Anna Barbara Holder on 1/29/1867 b. 9/26/1846 Dettingen. Their oldest child, Johann Jacob Diez was born 3/15/1867 in Dettingen. Sometime in January 1868 Friedrich, Anna Barbara and Jacob left Germany from the port of Bremen on the Steamer (Str) Union and arrived in the Port of New York on February 3rd, 1868 (M237 Roll 291 List 80). We thought it was the Ship Freihandel however that turned out to be incorrect. It appears from the manifest that the Master of the ship was H. P. v. Santen, burthen 2870 tons. The manifest amd church records note Friedrich as a farmer. After living several years in Wilson, New York, Friedrich and his family moved to the Town of Porter, Youngstown, New York. Anna Barbara gave birth to twelve children, ten living as of the census of 1900: Johann Jacob, Emma, Fred Jr., Louisa Pearl or Lucy, John Frederick, William, A. Mary, Christine (Tina), Bessie, Emma and two children not named in any records we have seen to date. Friedrich owned five farms which he eventually sold to his five living sons. The title to these farms still remains in some his descendants today. The following information was taken from the Wurttemberg Evangelische Dettingen (OA. Kircheim unter Teck) Familienbuch and Taufen. The records were written in an old German script and some very difficult to read. We apologize for any errors in spelling and months of the year. Note that within some entries the writer of the entry spelled the father's surname and child's surname differently ex. Diez and Dietz. Children's birth record that starts with Johann were called by their middle name ex. Johann Jacob was called Jacob. Children named Johannes did not have a middle name and were called Johannes or John.
